Autonomy - What does it mean?

I think it's related to Independence and Freedom.

What does it mean to be Independent?
What does it mean to be free?
Is it something that must be respected to exist or is it something that exists apart from other people recognizing it?
Is it an aspect of a person? A quality of a relationship?

Is it good?

I think "autonomy" has two rather different connotations. It can mean freedom from external control, or the capacity to direct the course of one's own life as one wishes. Some people, especially those of a Libertarian or Randian disposition, mistakenly assume that achieving autonomy in the first sense, also secures it in the second sense.
